madrone woodwork inc.

recommendation! were in the process of fixing up our kitchen and needed some adjustment done to a couple of kitchen cabinets. sure that it would get done i told my partner not to worry, i’d find someone. lo and behold luck/fate was on my side. after calling a couple of other woodwork operation i landed on madrone woodwork inc. via google maps.
the guy at the other end was super friendly, assured me they could get the job done in time for the delivery of appliances. off goes my partner the next morning, comes home and says they were great, friendly professional and firm with the price quoted to me. our cupboards were ready the next day. nice job, nice price, nice people. my partner says they were super nice to deal with. give em a try, they do all sorts of fine woodwork or low end like our entry level cabinets. woodworking burnaby b.c.

Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada

my sister joyce has ms.

for several years now her condition has been deteriorating yet she battles on, fighting every step of the way. the ms she has is progressive with no periods of remission. she has good days and not so good days. in the last few weeks things are not so good.

pantages theatre – gone

yet more willful destruction of vancouver’s history. after many, many years and no will or backbone, the city loses more buildings from our past. the entire block which included the pantages theatre built at the turn of the last century. see what real preservation looks like in my bellingham write-up a few posts back.

vancouver olympic village

the only winner is the king of junk, bob rennie. how sweet it must be to be given a virtual monopoly with no risk. vancouver is so fucked up as a community, no aesthetic plan other than mountains, so little culture, an aversion to art, and a desire to knock down everything to satisfy the condo king. ugh!

bellingham

the last time i was in bellingham, kennedy had not been elected. too bad! it is an architectural museum, full of well-preserved buildings from the late 1800′s and early 1900′s, wide streets drifting down to the sea. a waterfront waiting for a revival and sense of scale lost in most cities its size. the trip was short and i’ll be back to spend some time walking the streets with my camera. i also took a quick drive to a small village on the outskirts of bellingham, fairhaven a tourist boutique of well-preserved brick buildings circa late 1800′s. and the station for amtrak, the ferry to alaska and greyhound type bus service. think nelson, but smaller.

on the other hand, we went to shop at bellis fair – don’t bother! what a dull place it is.

we drove home via lynden a truly pleasant farming community just south of the aldergrove border crossing. not sure why we don’t have towns as well-kept as the states, they are good at it. maybe we’re in too big a rush to tear things down.

domestic bliss…

last day of living alone before the man of my life comes home! so clean up is on the agenda, washed pots and pans, tidied up living room, take a break to indulge in the glow from the fireplace as the snow starts to come down. it’s grey outside as soft flakes blow about in the breeze. atop the pilings the canada geese squawk at each other as they battle on for mates. i’ve set my pentax up for the day by the window. i’ve put on my new remote so i can fire away if something worth shooting comes into view. i really want to capture the geese flapping about.

take garbage to the bins..brrrrr. get the vacuum out..more fireplace viewing. have cbc radio on for background, something i don’t get to do too often. it’s still the one place i know you can learn everything you ever want to know if you listen often enough.

the ponds have been frozen over for several days now, they have turned white as the snow starts to accumulate.

tidy up the tools that have been sitting in a tray on the buffet for too long. the vacuum is just sitting there…not sure it will get a workout. the bed is next…and a tidy up of the bedroom (it’s not that far from the laundry basket…all of it mine).

lunch, hot soup, hot chocolate, nice fire.

grey day

other than the matchbox houses across the river with their maritime colours, the sky and river are nearly alike, save for the silver shimmer on the water, all is grey and murky. only the canada geese are active, madly courting with their strange cacophony of desire and battle.

art for the poor, lazy or travel averse..

google is going to capture the worlds art. meanwhile most museums have online galleries already. the big catch, how will they gather info about you? are you a warhol, monet or a da vinci?

meanwhile visit a gallery. do you know anything about titian, turner or thomson?
